Author Interview – Madeleine McLaughlin

What is your favorite color? Blue.

What is your favorite food? Steak but because of my dietary restrictions, I can’t have it.

What’s your favorite place in the entire world? My apartment. I used to think I’d like Tasmania but for right now, I want to be on my computer, writing.

How has your upbringing influenced your writing? Because my dad worked closely with police in his job at the border, I learned that ordinary looking people could have secrets. I think that pointed me in the direction of horror because, after all, horror is mostly what ordinary people are capable of when confronted with extraordinary circumstances. Not to be anti-people or anything. It’s just that life is not always nice or good and decisions are not always logical. That is the basis of horror, I believe.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated? By reading Wuthering Heights. I was so taken by the beauty of the language that I thought I’d like to do that. Well, I’m a long way away from accomplishing that but there’s still time.

When and why did you begin writing? I began seriously writing in the 1990s. I had become ill and couldn’t leave my room for long periods of time so I wanted to have a job where you could stay home and do it. I took writing through correspondence course. Later I learned that to promote you have to go out but by then I wasn’t as restricted.

How long have you been writing? Oh, forever. Not stories but journals. I’ve always been a great one for writing down thoughts and troubles and feelings.
